Brazil, Portugal and Switzerland emerged victorious in their World Cup openers while Uruguay and South Korea battled to a stalemate. While Cristiano Ronaldo enters the record book, Neymar appears to have been bitten by another injury bug.
Yahoo News Singapore brings some of the action from these matches in photos.
Switzerland's Breel Embolo scored the only goal in a Group E match versus Cameroon but the Swiss player refused to celebrate against the country of his birth.
South Korea held South American powerhouse Uruguay to a goalless draw in their Group H match that saw a mask-wearing Korean forward Son Heung-min return from injury.
Uruguay's fearsome attacking unit of Luis Suarez, Darwin Nuñez, Facundo Pellistri and Edison Cavani failed to find any openings.
South Korean fans wore Batman-like masks in support of their favourite Son.
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo dispatched a controversial penalty and made history by becoming the first person to score in five World Cup tournaments.

The penalty kick broke the deadlock and ensured Portugal emerged victorious against Ghana 3-2 in their Group H match.
Ronaldo has now scored in every World Cup since scoring his first in 2006. Days earlier, his contract with Manchester United was terminated after he criticised the manager, owners and his teammates at the English club in an authorised interview.
Ronaldo's scoring record in international play now stands at 118 goals after the penalty.

Brazil may have paid the victory with a heavy price as superstar Neymar hobbled off with an ankle sprain after enduring a physical Serbian side.
The Brazilian talisman also injured his back in the 2014 World Cup.
