See which states are the healthiest in America – MM+M Online

States in the northeast also fared well, with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey rounding out the top five.
California is the healthiest state in America, according to a study released Tuesday morning.
The research report was conducted by online fitness resource Total Shape and analyzed key health indicators across the country, including gyms per capita, percentage of adult smokers and obesity rates.
California has one of the highest amounts of gyms in the country as well as low percentages of obesity and smokers. The Golden State is also just above the national average when it comes to fast food restaurants per capita.
According to the study, states in the northeast also fared well. Connecticut is the second healthiest state in the country, followed by Massachusetts, Vermont and New Jersey.
One interesting finding was that Hawaii has the highest search rates for gym memberships but lacks easy access to fitness resources compared to other states. Additionally, the state has 102 fast-food restaurants per 100,000 people, the highest percentage in America.
“America has a rich culinary history and each state has vast arrays of different cuisines and delicacies. The temptation lies on every corner in every state,” a Total Shape spokesperson said in a statement. “However, Americans also have some of the greatest sports facilities and events in the world, which inspire millions to get out and get active! It’s clear from the research that many states have a healthy balance and in doing so maintain a healthy lifestyle.”
This study is the latest research evaluating which states and regions are the healthiest in the country.
In August, WalletHub released a report that found Rhode Island has the best healthcare system in the U.S., while Mississippi has the worst. The study analyzed all 50 states and the District of Columbia on more than 40 metrics, including healthcare cost, average monthly insurance premiums, access, physicians per capita and patient outcomes.
Two months prior, U.S. News unveiled its Healthiest Communities rankings in collaboration with CVS Health, with Los Alamos County, New Mexico taking home the top honor. As part of that report, the states with the highest median overall scores were Rhode Island, Minnesota and Iowa, while the lowest median overall scores were found in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.
